Showcase website, online store or web app: which one do you need?
Three kinds of web projects with very different goals. Here is how to tell which one fits your business.
The showcase website: present and get contacted
A showcase website presents your business, services, past work and contact details. Its job is to reassure and trigger contact: a call, a quote request, a visit to your shop.
It suits tradespeople, professionals, local shops, restaurants and service providers. Well ranked locally, it is often the best investment for a small business.
The online store: sell without middlemen
An e-commerce site adds a catalog, a cart and online payment. Customers buy directly, at any time. It takes more work: product pages, stock management, shipping, returns, transactional emails.
It makes sense as soon as your products can be sold without live advice, or to reach customers beyond your local area.
The web app: a working tool
A web application is not meant to be “visited” but used: customer portal, booking tool, management platform, subscription software. It has user accounts, permissions and constantly changing data.
It is the right answer when you want to automate a process, replace spreadsheets or offer a digital service to your customers.
How to choose
Ask yourself these questions:
- is my goal to be found and contacted? Showcase website
- can my customers buy on their own, without talking to me? Online store
- do my team or customers need to get tasks done online? Web app
- do I need several of these? They can live in the same project
Start simple, grow later
You do not have to build everything at once. Many projects start with a solid showcase website, then add online ordering or a customer area once the need is confirmed. A clean technical foundation from day one makes those steps much easier.
